Types of Polynesian Instruments

The common types of Polynesian instruments used in their songs are as follows:

 

Gourd Drums - Commonly known as "Ipu", come in two forms: "ipu heke" which is two gourds fused together or the "ipu heke ole" which is a single gourd drum. 

 

Ukuele (Guitar) - Known as a chordophone belonging to the guitar family, this instrument is commonly associated to the Polynesian music of Hawaii.

 

Slit Drum - A Polynesian instrument made from hollowed wood that produces a loud and distinctive sound.

 

Nose Flute - Known as 'Ohe hano ihu', this instrument is native to Hawaii and is played with the nose instead of the mouth.
